Is your wireless router not working with your Virgin Broadband Modem?

Virgin denies this, but if you are trying to connect a wireless router to your virgin broadband modem you will probably have difficulty obtaining the IP settings from the modem. This is because your modem will only give out the settings to one MAC address. Virgin say restarting the modem clears the MAC address filtering and allows you to add another pc/router. Well it didn’t work for me! I had two laptops and the internet connection would only work with one (the first one I attached to the modem). My Belkin wireless router wouldn’t work either. It wasn’t getting IP setting form the modem. Luckily the router allowed MAC address cloning. So I did a quick IPCONFIG on the working laptop and copied the laptops MAC address down. I then entered this into the router's clone MAC address page and restarted the Modem, then the router and hey presto it worked.

What benefits do Virgin get from filtering MAC addresses? Beats me.
